We're over halfway through the top Jaguars of 2019, and this is where some of the top defensive talents in the entire league reside. There are no more offensive players on this list and for good reason. The Jaguars' offense scored a paltry 15.3 points per game last season. Dede Westbrook, Andrew Norwell, Nick Foles, and Brandon Linder all made the list, but no offensive player ranks higher than five. Coming in at number four ... drum roll, please ... AJ Bouye. AJ Bouye had a down year by his standards, but he was still one of the better cornerbacks in football for much of last season. You could have made a case for Bouye as the top player on the Jaguars' defense in 2017 when he racked up six interceptions and defended 18 total passes. But like many of his teammates, Bouye's play fell off a bit last year. He picked off only one pass in 2018 and did allow some big plays in coverage. But his QB rating allowed of 79.7 was still rather impressive. An under appreciated stat: AJ Bouye didn't allow a single touchdown in coverage in all of 2018 and surrendered just two in 2017. There's something to be said for a player who doesn't allow opponents to get into the endzone. Bouye didn't seem to be his usual locked-in self last year. But heading into the 2019 regular season, Bouye appears to have the same focus that led him to one of the best cornerback seasons in franchise history just two years ago. The combination of AJ Bouye and Jalen Ramsey at cornerback is likely the best in all of football.
With what should be an improved pass rush and solid play around him, I expect Bouye to return to his Pro Bowl form in 2019. |
