On Friday at 11:30am (11:25) Coughlin addressed the media. This was the first time since Tom Coughlin was reintroduced to as the EVP of Football Ops that he has been available to the media. The presser was broadcasted live on Jaguars.com LIVE, the Jaguars Facebook, on the Jaguars App, and on 1010XL, 92.5 FM.
After a whirlwind of a week in terms of roster moves that included re-signing four players, restructuring another ones contract, cutting another, and executing two trades, media members were in a frenzy trying to find out what the strategy has been over the last week plus, and what the strategy will be moving forward. Let's get to it! Tom started out by saying that he won't comment on player personnel moves that have yet to be decided upon when he was asked about the future of Prince Amukamara with the team. On building the roster: "you have to realize there is more than one year" On free agency: "We have a lot of positions to fill" "We have work to do" "We expect to be very competitive on March 9th" "You research from day one and you have to know as much as you can about the player, not only his capability on the field but his character off the field" On the running backs: "I think we have to play better" On Dante Fowler and Yannick Ngakoue: "They both have shown the ability to rush the passer, we need more production ... I'm encouraged by that spot", but Coughlin did make it clear that you can never have enough pass rushers. On Todd Wash's defense: "The defense will change a little bit as we adapt to what we see on the horizon" On re-signing Abry Jones: "We like his potential, his quickness, there's versatility there" On the fullback position: "Fullbacks have been discussed, we have benefited in my circumstance from very good free agent fullbacks" When asked about Paul Posluszny: Coughlin made it clear that he likes Posluszny's professional and serious demeanor. On how the Jaguars brain trust is working together: "We're on the same page ... we will work as a team." On Keenan McCardell as WR coach: "You better believe he can share information" (on being successful) On the message to players: "I don't think there's gonna be real mystery on what the presentation is . . . there won't be any misunderstanding in regards to that" On the Combine: "That'll be the same" (for Coughlin it won't change in terms of evaluating) "Different interview strategies based on the individual" On whether or not he is having fun: "I always have fun" The most intriguing comments came regarding the team pass rushers when Coughlin made it clear that you can never have enough of them (Jason Pierre-Paul to Jax?). He also made it clear that fullback could be in the cards for the Jaguars moving forward. Following the press conference the same key themes remain. Tom Coughlin and Doug Marrone are going to be on the same page with their old school, blue collar approach. Everyone will be held accountable and everyone will have a role to play. Some starters may even play on special teams. Everything will be a team effort. Everyone will be under the microscope.
