On Monday the Jaguars reconvened for the start of their 2019 offseason program. It's the first coaching staff and players have been able to come together since the disappointing end of their 2018 campaign.
A lot has changed since then. Tashaun Gipson, Jermey Parnell and — most notably — Blake Bortles are no longer with the team.
There's a new "franchise lifting" QB in town: newly signed veteran and former Super Bowl MVP, Nick Foles. There's a host of new faces at running back and offensive line along with some new receiving threats at tight end and wide out.
But one thing that isn't different is the absence of Jalen Ramsey to start the voluntary portion of the offseason program. To some this surely a disappointment, but it was to be expected. Jalen Ramsey marches to the beat of his own drum. Over the last two offseasons, Ramsey didn't participate in voluntary workouts, instead opting to train with his father. It appears that's the route he'll take again this year. It shouldn't be a cause for concern. In each of the last two seasons, Ramsey was chosen to be a Pro Bowler.
A bit more surprising, however, is Telvin Smith's tardiness. Once looked at as an unquestioned leader of the defense, Smith had a down year in 2018.
Doug Marrone told the media on Tuesday that he has yet to hear from Smith (or Ramsey), but that he's sure they're working hard.
When Calais Campbell spoke to the media, he said those are two guys (Smith and Ramsey) that he's not worried about.
Aside from Ramsey and Smith, there's full attendance at the voluntary portion of the offseason program for the Jaguars. The team has begun its 2019 journey. At this point, it's all about getting to know each other; establishing a chemistry and culture that will lead to success this fall.
