After a miserable start to 2017 for kicker Jason Myers, the Jaguars decided to go in a different direction. Myers had been the Jaguars place kicker for over two years, but a decline in his field goal accuracy led the Jaguars to look for new options.
Myers was cut following a performance in week six that saw him miss two of his three field goal attempts and allow a 103 yard kick off return. The Jaguars quickly singed Josh Lambo to their active roster. Lambo had been the Chargers starting kicker in 2015 and 2016, but was cut prior to the start of the 2017 regular season. For the Chargers Lambo had similar numbers to Myers, but never saw his FG % drop below 80. Let's take a look at how Myers has performed since joining the Jaguars. Kickoffs: Lambo has performed well in kick off situations. While he's only hit three touchbacks on 16 kickoffs, opposing teams are averaging less than 20 yards per return on his KOs. That is the best number of his career and a major improvement over the 27 yard average that Myers was surrendering on his kickoffs in 2017. Of course, a lot of this has to do with the coverage units' improvements, but there has been a stark contrast since Lambo signed with the Jags. Grade: B+ Overall Lambo's kickoffs have been highly successful, but a higher percentage of touchbacks would help. Field Goals: Josh Lambo has been nothing short of incredible on field goals since joining the Big Cats. He's made 7/7 attempts including a 56 yarder - his career long. In the Jaguars most recent contest Lambo was asked to deliver in the clutch multiple times - Needless to say he answered the call. Lambo drilled a field goal that got the Jaguars into overtime late in the fourth quarter and then hit the game winner - a kick that was partially blocked but had enough power to make it through the uprights. The only knock on Lambo so far in terms of field goals is the fact that his game winning kick was partially blocked. You want kicks to have plenty of height on them. Grade: A+ Even with his game winner being partially blocked Lambo has been perfect as the Jaguars field goal kicker. PATs: Lambo is 5/6 on extra points since joining the Jaguars. His lone miss was a block in the Jaguars recent win over the Chargers. Perhaps Lambo needs to work on getting more height on his shorter field goal attempts. Still, Lambo has provided a since of calm after the Jaguars score a TD. A far cry from when fans were on pins and needles when Myers would come in for PATs. Grade: A Lambo has provided a since of stability for the Jaguars after they're able to find the end zone. Overall Assessment: A Lambo has been a breath of fresh air in Jacksonville. He has some fantastic celebrations and has been nearly perfect as the Jaguars place kicker. He might need to work on getting a little bit more height on his kicks in the future in order to avoid blocks. He could also stand to raise his touchback % on kick offs. But at this point we are really nit picking - Lambo has been one of the Jaguars most consistent and reliable players since joining the squad just under a month ago. |
