There hasn't been a ton of news in Jags Land as of late. Most of the talk around the NFL and the Jaguars has been surrounding the upcoming free agency period and the draft that will soon follow. But earlier in the week Roger Goodell spoke about the NFL's London initiative and shed some light on where the NFL is in terms of having a team permanently stationed in London. The Jaguars have long been rumored to be the most attractive team for the NFL to potentially move across the pond. Of course, there's been a lot of positive momentum for the Jaguars and their long term ability in recent years. Ever since Shad Khan purchased the team in 2012 things have been moving in the right direction for Jacksonville's NFL franchise. But the numerous stadium upgrades, investments around downtown by Shad Khan, and continued public commitment to the city haven't stopped the talking heads around the country from suggesting that Jacksonville's franchise will inevitably be known as the London Jaguars one day. What happens years down the road remains to be seen. But Goodell's recent comments made it clear that the NFL is a long ways off from even thinking about putting a team in London. Here's what Roger Goodell had to say:
"The issue for us still is, Can we do this competitively for the team that is based there, but also for the 31 other clubs? That involves scheduling, it involves a lot of other matters that you don’t want to compromise. And until we can get comfortable on that I don’t think we’ll be NFL-ready in London" That's about as definitive as it get's when it comes to Roger Goodell speak. While there's little question that talk about the Jaguars eventually moving will continue to permeate throughout the media, this bit of news should give Jaguars fans a bit more comfort that their team won't be going anywhere, at least for the time being. |
