My top 2019 quarterback prospect will attend the NFL's annual scouting combine in Indianapolis later this month, this according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. When Kyler Murray steps on a football field, he displays a rare combination of skills. As a passer, he shows touch, accuracy — especially on the run, and a strong arm. But Murray is much more than a passer. His athleticism is almost unprecedented for a player at his position. His elusiveness will be a sight to behold at the next level. But Murray does not come without risk. His size is a significant question mark. So is his commitment to football. Right now it's unclear which professional sport Murray will pursue. He has been waffling between baseball and football since he won the Heisman Trophy for his exceptional play during the 2018 college football season. Murray's decision to attend the scouting combine seems like an indication that the polarizing talent might be leaning towards football. He'll not only have the opportunity to put to bed questions about his size, but Murray will also interview with team personnel in a one on one setting. That will allow teams to ask him the hard hitting questions like "Hey, Kyler, you gonna play football or what?" It'll also give teams the opportunity to watch Murray alongside the rest of the 2019 QB class.
Murray accepting a combine invitation is overwhelmingly good news for those amongst us that want to see Kyler on a football field next fall (me, me, me!), but it's far from a final confirmation that he will ultimately strap on shoulder pads instead of swinging for the fences as a professional baseball player. From a Jaguars-centric perspective, Murray could be in play with the seventh overall pick. His ability to move in the pocket, roll out, and throw on the run should be enticing for a club that wants to run the football and create explosive plays.
