The Jaguars second year cornerback Jalen Ramsey has been a household name for much of his career. After his time a Florida State, Ramsey was thought of as a transcendent NFL prospect thanks to his elite speed, change of direction, leaping ability, physical play and most of all his Alpha Dog mentality.
The Jaguars landed him with the fifth overall pick in the 2016 draft and the rest has been history. His rookie season was as impressive as they come. He went head to head with some of the best in football and held his own each and every week, but he truly burst onto the scene over the last half of the season in which his level of play took a staggering leap. Over the last couple weeks of the season he recorded his first pick six and recorded a bevy of pass break ups. Enterting 2017 Ramsey was expected to be one the better CBs in all of football, but is it fair to say that he has been the very best through three weeks of play? Darn, right! In week one, Ramsey and his new partner in crime AJ Bouye were tasked with slowing down DeAndre Hopkins. Hopkins is one of the best and most physical WRs in football, but he stood no chance when lined up against Ramsey. Hopkins managed a couple of short catches, but finished the day averaging just 7 yards per catch. Ramsey physically abused Hopkins. It's clear that Ramsey enjoys his matchup's with Hopkins and takes great pleasure in ruffing up the All-Pro receiver. In week two Ramsey was even better. While the Jaguars results as a team were a disappointment against the Titans, Ramsey's performance couldn't have been better. The Titans did their best to avoid him for the entirety of the game. He finished with 1 target, allowing ZERO catches on the day. It's hard to think that Ramsey could do better than allowing zero catches in a game, but if it is possible then he achieved it in week three. Against the Ravens on Sunday Ramsey was dominant. He allowed just two completions for 11 yards and got his hands on a pass of his own, recording his first INT of 2017. Joe Flacco's passer rating when targeting Ramsey was 0.0 on the day. In total Ramsey has been targeted 14 times in 2017. He's given up just four catches for 26 yards and has one interception. He's allowed a QB rating of only 9.8. These stats via Pro Football Focus, who have Jalen Ramsey ranked as their top CB heading into week four. If Ramsey isn't the best player at his position in the world then he's damn close. But we'll take him all day. At just 22 years old the sky is the limit for this ultra talented defensive back. And the fact that opposing offenses are already trying to avoid Ramsey at all costs speaks volumes. Stay tuned for more! Do you think Jalen is the best cornerback in football?
