The Jaguars have released former second-round pick, linebacker Myles Jack, the team announced on Tuesday.

The news came just a day after the Jaguars agreed to terms on a contract with free agent linebacker Foyesade Oluokun.

Jack had been a member of the Jaguars since the team drafted him in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft. Despite seeing his stock plummet late in the draft process due to what was considered by some a degenerative knee issue, Jack played in at least fourteen games in five of his six career seasons. In total, Jack played 88 games for the Jaguars, registering 513 total tackles, 19 tackles for loss, 15 passes defended, 6.5 sacks, four fumble recoveries, three interceptions, two forced fumbles, and a defensive touchdown.

Jack was a team captain for the Jaguars in 2021 and was certainly one of the most talented players on the team. But he always appeared somewhat miscast as a middle linebacker, a role that Jaguars coaches, across multiple regimes, forced upon Jack. He's always been at his best as an outside linebacker, which allows him to fly sideline to sideline and utilize his unique athletic traits. But in Jacksonville, he seldom got the opportunity to play on the outside.

Releasing Jack saves the Jaguars $8.35 million in 2022 salary cap space.

Jaguars' GM Trent Baalke's statement on the release of Myles Jack:

"Myles has made a positive contribution on and off the field in Jacksonville, providing leadership in our locker room as a captain and making a significant impact on the First Coast community. His recognition as the team’s 2021 Walter Payton Man of the Year nominee is indicative of his commitment to inspiring positive change in those around him. We appreciate all he has done for our organization and wish him the best."

Myles Jack Wasn't Down.
