The hiring of three assistant coaches usually isn't headline news, but when one of them has the last name Kiffin people take notice. Monte Kiffin who is now 76 years old famously architected the "Tampa 2" defense -- a scheme that has been widely used across the league and even lead the Buccaneers to their first ever Super Bowl. A living legend, he has coached longer than most can remember, totaling 28 years as an NFL coach. His most recent stint as a defensive coach was in Dallas. Prior to being officially added to the Jags coaching staff Kiffin served as an advisor with the team. He will bring a depth of knowledge and a great defensive mind to a team that is still searching for the answers on defense.
John Benton was added to the coaching staff as an assistant offensive line coach. His resume is surely less impressive than Kiffin's, but whose isn't. Benton was Miami's offensive line coach for two seasons prior to joining the Jags and has 12 years of NFL coaching experience. John Donovan was an offensive coordinator under James Franklin at Penn State and at Vanderbilt prior. This is his first NFL coaching gig, although he has spent 19 years coaching in college. Donovan will serve as an offensive quality control coach for the Jags. |
