Olivier Vernon - transition tag - The transition tag designation means that the Dolphins, his current team, have the first right of refusal when it comes to matching another teams offer. Basically the Dolphins can match the Jaguars offer if the Jaguars were to try and sign Vernon. If the Jaguars feel Vernon is worth the monetary risk, then they could offer Vernon a contract that the Dolphins likely wouldn't be able to match.
Eric Berry - franchise tag - Berry would have been one of the best free safeties to ever hit the market, but it looks like he will remain a Chief for at least one more season. A major blow for the Jaguars, but one that was expected nonetheless. Trumaine Johnson - franchise tag - A 26 year old cornerback who solidified himself as one of the best young corners in football last year with 7 interceptions, Johnson would have been a major upgrade to the Jaguars secondary. This does however open the door for the Jaguars to pursue the Rams other free agent cornerback, Janoris Jenkins, who is only 27 years old himself and would also provide a major upgrade to the Jaguars secondary. Von Miller - franchise tag - Miller will stay in Denver for at least one more season. He would have been the hottest pass rushing commodity to hit free agency in some time and would have been a major get for the pass rush needy Jaguars. Alshon Jeffrey - franchise tag - Jeffrey certainly would have not been targeted by the Jaguars, but this assures that Jeffrey won’t be making his way to any AFC South division rivals, like the wide receiver needy Titans. Muhammad Wilkerson - franchise tag - One of the best and most versatile defensive lineman in the business. At only 26 years of age, Wilkerson recored 12 sacks in 2015 and would have been a major addition to the Jaguars defensive front. Josh Norman - franchise tag - Norman would have been the highest priced free agency cornerback by far. The 28 year old Norman is coming off of a break out year in which he helped lead the Panthers all the way to the Super Bowl. Norman will remain a Panther for at least one more season. He certainly would have been a fit in Jacksonville, but at what cost? Justin Tucker - franchise tag - Tucker, the high priced young kicker, likely would not have been pursued by the Jaguars Cordy Glenn - franchise tag - A great left tackle for the Bills; the Jags are not in the market for a new LT. Kirk Cousins - franchise tag - Cousins will be staying in the nation’s capital for at least one more season. This helps out the Jags in that he will not be pursued by their quarterback needy division rival, the Texans. Not Tagged:
Malik Jackson - Jackson wasn't franchised by the Broncos based on their need to keep Von Miller in Denver. Expect the Jaguars to make a strong run at Jackson, a versatile defensive lineman that would add talent and depth to the Jaguars defensive front.
Janoris Jenkins - Jenkins is a 27 year old cover corner who has great playmaking ability. He would provide an immediate upgrade on the outside for the Jaguars young secondary and would likely be a day one starter. He doesn't have the ideal size for a Gus Bradley CB, but he would be a welcome addition to the team nonetheless. Sean Smith - The 28 year old cornerback from Kansas City will likely be set to hit the open market. He has the ideal size and play style to fit in perfectly in the Jaguars defensive scheme. Look for the Jaguars to make a run at the 6'3'' CB in the coming weeks. |
