The Jaguars' tight ends have a chance to turn heads in 2019.

BY JORDAN DE LUGO

Widely viewed as the weakest position on the roster, the Jaguars' tight ends have been making plays throughout OTAs.

Jaguars' offensive coordinator John DeFilippo spoke with the media on Wednesday and touched on the topic of his tight ends.

"I'm very pleased with our tight end room," said DeFilippo. "Number one, those guys are all very smart. Especially James (O-Shaughnessy) and Geoff (Swaim), can pretty much line up anywhere. Josh (Oliver) is coming along. He's working his butt off. He's just having some rookie issues in terms of lining up, which every rookie is having right now in the NFL, so it's nothing against Josh. But once he really gets going in training camp and has a chance to let the information sink in, I think we have a chance to have a pretty good room. And all those guys are big guys. You got two guys that weigh around 260 pounds that can run. So I'm looking forward to seeing the pads go on, to see how well we block at the point of attack. We did a good job there this offseason."

The OC is pleased with where the tight end group is at this time. But he's absolutely on the money with one of his observations.

"I think we have a chance to have a pretty good room."

That's precisely what the Jaguars have in this group: a chance.

There's no lack of ability between Josh, Geoff, and James.

But Josh Oliver is a rookie from San Jose State that still has a long way to go on the mental side. IF he can develop quickly in training camp, he has a chance to become a dangerous weapon for Nick Foles.

Geoff Swaim has never had issues with his play on the field. The problem is he has a hard time staying on the field. He's missed 15 games in the last three seasons. IF Swaim can stay healthy, he'll have a chance to be a solid two-way tight end.

James O'Shaughnessy is a reliable third tight end, but will he be able to be a featured player in the offense IF Josh Oliver struggles early on or IF Geoff Swaim can't stay healthy?

There are a lot of ifs with this group. But IF things go their way, this tight end group could be one of the best the Jaguars has ever had.
