By now, unless you've been hiding under a rock, you probably know that the Jaguars defense was absolutely dominant against the Houston Texans in their season opener on Sunday. The defense set franchise single game records and held the Texans to just 7 points.
The most impressive player from the dynamic effort? Calais Campbell. The Jaguars biggest free agent acquisition in the 2017 offseason was the former Arizona Cardinals defensive lineman. The Jaguars signed Campbell to a 4 year deal worth $60 million! Signing a player that's past the age of 30 to such a rich deal is always a bit of a risk. But throughout the offseason and training camp Calais Campbell made it clear that he wasn't here to collect a paycheck and fade off into the sunset. No, Campbell wants to win, and he want's his gold jacket. If Sunday was any indication, then Calais Campbell is well on his way a lot of wins and a gold jacket. He put up a career best 4 SACKS, and in doing so also set the Jaguars single game record for sacks by an individual. Campbell now leads the league in sacks and has twice the amount of the next closest defender. If Campbell and the Jaguars defense can play half as well as they did last Sunday, then this team will be on it's way to a division title. Shout out to you, Calais Campbell!
