Taven Bryan Activated
Fourth-year defensive tackle Taven Bryan has yet to take a practice rep during an Urban Meyer training camp. The former first-round pick showed up at camp with a black eye, and after initially being placed on the Non-Football Injury list, he quickly found himself on the reserve/COVID-19 list.
On Sunday, the Jaguars activated Bryan, and he'll now be eligible to fully participate in practice moving forward. Bryan has been labeled a "bust" and for good reason: he's failed even to become a decent starter in the NFL. Nevertheless, he'll get his chance in practice to show the Jaguars' new coaching staff that he's made progress.
James Robinson Makes Top 100
The annual Top 100 list, as voted on by the players, can be fun and infuriating at the same time. The voting process has left many confused and has led to some odd results over the years. But for James Robinson, a 2020 undrafted free agent running back, to find his way onto the list after just one season in the NFL, is a triumph. Robinson came in at #100 after setting the NFL record for scrimmage yards by an undrafted rookie. In 14 games, Robinson rushed for 1,070 yards on 240 attempts for an average of 4.5 yards per carry. He also hauled in 49 catches for an additional 344 yards and scored a total of ten touchdowns.
Roster Cuts Incoming
The Jaguars, along with every other club in the NFL, will cut their roster size from 90 down to 85 on Tuesday. Every week for the next three, cuts will take place. On Tuesday the 24th, clubs will cut down to 80, and on the 31st, down to 53. With the first batch of roster cuts incoming, the Jaguars' coaching staff will need to pick and choose their spots. Where do they feel comfortable with their depth? Which players aren't getting the job done? I hate to even mention who I think might not make it at this stage in the game, but a couple of players have stood out to me in a negative light. Tight end Tim Tebow greatly struggles to block and lacks the athleticism and size to be a major factor in the passing game. On Saturday night, cornerback Corey Straughter couldn't find consistency and was on the wrong end of several first-down passes by the Browns. I think defensive tackles Daniel Ross and Kenny Randall have performed well, but there's a lot of depth in front of them on the roster. Wide Receiver Jeff Cotton dropped his only target in the first preseason game, an easy one that he needed to bring in. Receivers Tim Jones and Josh Imatorbhebhe haven’t practiced much.
