The Jaguars will interview Mike Smith today per Ian Rapoport on twitter.
Mike Smith is the current defensive coordinator for the Tamba Bay Buccaneers, and also spent time as the defensive coordinator in Jacksonville where he coached some of the best and most talented defenses in Jaguars history. Both of those stops as defensive coordinator are nice, and it's great that Smith has familiarity with the Jaguars organization - he has worked with the Jaguars General Manager Dave Caldwell. But what makes him most attractve is the time he spent in Atlanta as the Falcons head coach.
When Mike Smith was hired to take over as the Atlanta Falcons head coach the Falcons were in a much worse place roster wise than the Jaguars are now. All he did was help draft some really talented players including Matt Ryan, coach the Falcons to 66 wins in seven years, and make the playoffs four times.
The Jaguars have a fair amount of young talent on both sides of the ball, which should be very enticing for Mike Smith, who after having two poor seasons to end his tenure in Atlanta has been coaching the Bucs defense, who came on strong in 2016.
Mike Smith won't be a sexy hire if the Jaguars do decide to go with him. He's not a hot young offensive coordinator and he is a guy that fans are already familiar with. But he would be a solid hire. A guy who still has a lot left in the tank, and has had major success as a head coach in the NFL, Mike Smith would make a lot of sense for the Jaguars.
No matter who the Jaguars go with as the HC, they'll need to hire quality coordinators on both sides of the ball for things to work.
What do you think? Would you like to see Mike Smith in Duval?
