The Jaguars have already released several players since their preseason finale last night in Atlanta. Back up linebacker Jordan Tripp, offensive lineman Rashod Hill, and reserve defensive tackle T.J. Barnes all got the axe. Many believed that Tripp would secure a spot on the roster, but seeing him, Barnes, and Hill go isn't a major surprise to anyone.
Much more a surprise is the release of Ryan Davis and Tyrone Holmes. Davis was a versatile pass rusher for the Jaguars since entering the league as an undrafted free agent in 2012. Over the last two seasons Davis recorded a total of 10 sacks, more than anyone else currently on the Jaguars roster during that span. He was never going to be a starter or a guy that was going to play most defensive snaps, but he was a player that provided the versatility to play inside as a pass rusher, outside as a pass rusher, and at the OTTO linebacker position. As a local kid and graduate of Bethune Cookman, many fans will be sad to see Davis go, but he will, with out a doubt, get looked at by another teams. The release of Tyrone Holmes, a rookie whom the Jaguars drafted in the 6th round of this year's draft, also came as a bit of a surprise. He's an ultra speedy edge rusher that came on strong toward the end of training camp and preseason, and even recovered a fumble in last night's contest. The undersized pass rusher apparently didn't provide enough to earn a spot on the roster. The release of these two pass rushers leaves the Jaguars with only Dante Fowler, Yannick Ngakoue, and Chris Smith as true edge rushers. This will put a lot on the shoulders of all three players. Two of the three edge rushers, or LEOs, on the Jaguars roster haven't played a down in the NFL. The Jaguars will obviously rely heavily on a steady inside pass rush from Malik Jackson, Sen'Derrick Marks, and Sheldon Day, but to get rid of two edge rushers so late in the game is a bit of a risk. We'll see how it works out for them in the coming weeks. More From Generation JaguarAFC South Offensive Preview: TitansJaguars Fall in Preseason FinaleJaguars Fantasy Football Preview: Quarterback |
