The Jaguars, who recently traded away starting tight end Julius Thomas, have signed free agent tight end Mychal Rivera.
Rivera, who entered the league in 2013 as a 6th round pick by the Oakland Raiders, has recorded 144 career catches, over 1,400 yards, and 10 TDs. While joining the Jaguars will be uncharted territory for the for University of Tennessee tight end, he will be familiar with some of his teammates -- one stands out in particular. Rivera and Jaguars defensive tackle Malik Jackson not only played together at Tennessee but were also teammates in high school. As the Jaguars roster stands now the 6'3'', 245 lb. Rivera could be the starter at tight end. He provides decent blocking ability, especially in passing situations, and also has displayed the ability to be an effective receiver. In 2015 Rivera was on track to be the starter for the Raiders, but newly hired head coach elected to draft Clive Walford and add Lee Smith to the roster which left Rivera as the odd man out. He'll now have his second opportunity to prove himself a starter in this league, that is if the Jaguars don't do the same thing his former team did to him - draft a tight end in the first two days of the draft.
